What the result represents

The calculated GPM is an average planning flow, not a guaranteed pump setting. A pump’s delivered flow depends on speed and total dynamic head across the complete system.

Check every component

Compare the target flow with the filter design flow, heater minimum and maximum flow, chlorinator limits, valve ratings and plumbing velocity. Oversizing one component does not remove the limits of the others.

Measure after setup

A flow meter or a verified pump-automation estimate can help confirm actual operation. Recheck after cleaning the filter or changing valve positions because system resistance changes.

What does GPM mean for a pool?

GPM means gallons per minute. It describes how much water passes a point in the circulation system each minute.

How is required pool flow calculated?

Multiply pool volume by the desired number of cycles and divide by the available minutes.

Is higher flow always better?

No. Excessive flow can increase noise, energy use, velocity and pressure while exceeding equipment limits.

Can my filter be smaller than the calculated flow?

The filter must be rated for the actual flow and application. A larger filter often reduces maintenance frequency and pressure loss, but selection should follow manufacturer data.

Why is actual pump flow lower than the label?

Advertised maximum flow is not the same as installed flow. Pipe length, fittings, elevation, valves, filters and heaters add head loss.

Do I need a flow meter?

It is not mandatory for every residential system, but it gives a direct reading and makes speed and turnover estimates more dependable.

How does pump speed affect GPM?

For a given system, flow generally changes roughly in proportion to pump speed, while power changes much more rapidly. Actual performance should be checked against the pump curve.

Should heater flow be included?

Yes. The heater’s flow limits must be respected whenever water is routed through it.
