Can I size a filter from pool volume alone?
Not reliably. Filter sizing should consider the design flow, filter type, manufacturer-rated flow and expected debris load.
Should the filter flow rating exceed pump flow?
The filter should be rated for the maximum flow it will receive in the intended operating modes. Never exceed the manufacturer maximum flow rating.
Why is extra filter area useful?
More area can reduce cleaning frequency and pressure rise between service intervals. It does not eliminate the need to match the filter to flow and plumbing.
Are cartridge, sand and DE ratings directly comparable?
No. They use different media, cleaning methods and area conventions. Compare each product using its certified or manufacturer-published flow limits and service requirements.
Does a larger filter improve water clarity?
Media type, circulation, chemistry and maintenance all matter. A generously sized filter may support longer cycles, but it cannot correct poor sanitation or inadequate circulation.
What pressure should a clean filter show?
There is no universal clean pressure because systems differ. Record the gauge reading immediately after cleaning or backwashing and follow the manufacturer guidance for service thresholds.
Can the filter be smaller than the pump outlet size?
Connection size alone does not determine capacity. Check the filter flow rating, pressure rating and plumbing design rather than relying only on port diameter.
When should a professional verify filter sizing?
