Why velocity matters

Smaller pipe raises water velocity and friction loss at a given flow. Excessive velocity can increase noise, reduce pump efficiency and make the system harder to balance.

Suction and return are different

Manufacturer engineering references commonly apply lower velocity limits to suction plumbing than to return plumbing. Public and commercial systems may have mandatory code limits, and suction design also involves entrapment protection.

This calculator sizes only from flow and velocity. It does not calculate total dynamic head, fitting equivalent length, elevation, branch balancing or allowable suction conditions.

Why is the suggested nominal size only approximate?

The calculator does not know the actual inside diameter of the selected pipe product. Compare the calculated diameter with the manufacturer’s dimension table.

Should a new pump use the old pipe size?

Not automatically. A higher-flow pump on restrictive plumbing may waste energy or operate outside the desired range. Review the complete system before replacement.
