Does turnover rate determine the final pump model?

No. Turnover provides a target flow, but the final selection must also account for total dynamic head, pipe size, filter limits, heater limits and local requirements.

What is total dynamic head?

Total dynamic head represents resistance in the circulation system, expressed in feet of head. It includes friction and other losses through pipe, fittings, filters, heaters and water features.

Why must I use a pump curve?

A pump curve shows the flow a specific pump can deliver at different head values. Horsepower alone does not show whether the pump will meet the required operating point.

Is a larger pool pump always better?

No. Oversizing can increase noise, energy use and flow stress, and may exceed the filter or plumbing rating. The goal is adequate flow at the actual system resistance.

How does a variable-speed pump affect sizing?

Variable-speed pumps let the system operate at lower flow for filtration and higher flow only when needed. The selected model still must meet the highest required flow at the system head.

Should spa jets and water features be included?

Yes. They may establish a higher design-flow requirement than normal filtration. Evaluate each operating mode separately.

Can this calculator replace a hydraulic assessment?

No. It is a planning tool. Complex systems, long plumbing runs, elevated equipment and shared pool-spa plumbing should be evaluated by a pool professional.

What if I do not know total dynamic head?

Use a conservative planning range only, then measure or calculate TDH before buying. Existing systems can sometimes be assessed with pressure and vacuum readings or calibrated flow data.
