What turnover time means
Turnover is the theoretical time needed to move a volume of water equal to the pool’s capacity through the circulation system. It is a useful planning metric, but real pools mix imperfectly and contain areas with different flow.
Finding a realistic GPM
Use a properly installed flow meter when available. Pump curves can also estimate flow when total dynamic head and speed are known, but filter loading, valves, heaters and plumbing resistance change the result.

Restricting valves normally adds resistance and may reduce total flow. Balance returns carefully rather than using restriction as a shortcut.
Does a variable-speed pump change turnover time?
Yes. Lower speed normally produces lower flow, so a turnover takes longer, although lower-speed operation can be much more energy efficient.
