Why pH dosage is not universal
Pool pH does not respond to a single fixed formula. Total alkalinity, cyanuric acid, borates, aeration and the concentration of the chemical all affect the dose. This calculator therefore scales the manufacturer’s label rate rather than pretending that pH alone determines an exact quantity.
How to use the estimate
Enter a recent test result, choose a target within the range recommended for your pool and sanitizer, then enter the dose rate from the product label. Treat the result as an upper planning estimate and split larger changes into smaller additions.

What pH should a swimming pool have?
CDC guidance places pool pH in the 7.0–7.8 range. Many residential operators aim for a narrower operating range within those limits, but the correct target should match the sanitizer system and local guidance.
Why does the calculator ask for the label dose?
Products differ in concentration and chemistry, and the same pH change can require different amounts depending on total alkalinity and other buffering factors. The label rate makes the estimate specific to the product in hand.
Can I add the full calculated amount at once?
Large adjustments are safer when divided into smaller doses. Add part of the estimate, circulate according to the label, retest, and continue only if needed.
Does total alkalinity affect pH adjustment?
Yes. Higher total alkalinity generally makes pH harder to move, while low alkalinity can allow pH to swing more easily. Test alkalinity before making repeated pH corrections.
Can I use muriatic acid and dry acid interchangeably?
No. They have different strengths and handling requirements. Use the dose rate for the exact product and concentration you are applying.
Why did my pH rise again after adding acid?
Aeration, water features, saltwater chlorine generation and high alkalinity can cause pH to rise again. Repeated drift is a water-balance issue, not necessarily a calculator error.
Should I adjust pH before adding chlorine?
Balanced pH helps chlorine work effectively. Follow the sequence recommended by your product labels and avoid adding incompatible chemicals together.
Is this calculator suitable for hot tubs?
The arithmetic can scale a label dose, but hot tubs have small water volumes and can change rapidly. Use spa-specific products and dosing instructions, and measure carefully.
