Chlorine Calculator
Estimate chlorine dosage from pool volume, current free chlorine, target level and product strength for routine sanitizing and adjustments.

Chlorine Calculator
Enter measured values rather than estimates whenever possible. Results are planning guidance and must be checked against equipment manuals, chemical labels and local requirements.
How this estimate works
The calculator first determines the pure available chlorine needed for the selected ppm increase, then divides by the entered available-chlorine fraction. Product density and formulation still require label-based conversion.
Improve calculator accuracy
Verify pool volume
Use construction records, internal measurements or a metered fill when available.
Use current readings
Test water or measure system conditions immediately before a significant adjustment.
Check product strength
Read the active ingredient, available strength and dosage table on the exact label.
Adjust in stages
For large changes, apply a partial amount, circulate, retest and refine.
Before applying the result
Do not combine incompatible chemicals, bypass equipment limits or rely on a calculator when measurements are uncertain. Wear the protective equipment required by the label and keep chemicals separated, dry and secured.
Frequently asked questions
What information is needed to calculate chlorine dose?
You need pool volume, current free chlorine, target free chlorine and the product strength shown on the label. Different chlorine products contain different amounts of available chlorine.
Why should I follow the product label after calculating?
The label is the controlling instruction for use, safety and dosage. Calculator results are planning estimates and cannot account for every formulation.
Does pH affect chlorine performance?
Yes. Chlorine effectiveness changes with pH, so test and balance pH as part of sanitation. CDC guidance for home pools lists a pH range of 7.0 to 7.8.
How does cyanuric acid affect the chlorine target?
Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight but also changes disinfection behavior. CDC recommends at least 2 ppm chlorine in pools when cyanuric acid is used.
Can I mix different chlorine products?
No. Never mix chlorine products with each other or with acids. Store and handle each chemical according to its label.
Should chlorine be added with swimmers in the pool?
Follow the product label, facility rules and required re-entry guidance. Keep swimmers out whenever the label or treatment procedure requires it.
Why should I retest after dosing?
Circulation, sunlight, contaminants and volume error can change the result. Retesting confirms whether the target was reached safely.
Can tablets be used for a precise immediate adjustment?
Tablets dissolve gradually and are not ideal for an immediate measured increase. Use only as directed and account for stabilizer added by products such as trichlor.
