Choose a LaMotte Test for Your Pool Routine
These are different testing workflows, not interchangeable models. Check which parameters and reagents are included before ordering.
Insta-TEST 6 Plus strips (3028)
LaMotte code 3028 contains 50 dip-and-read strips. It checks free and total chlorine, bromine, alkalinity, pH, total hardness and cyanuric acid. Bromine uses the chlorine pad scale, not a separate pad.
This is a screening tool, not a digital meter. Read pads immediately as directed; keep the hinged bottle closed and dry. Verify expiration before ordering.
ColorQ 2x TesTabs PRO 7 (2087)
The 2087 is a seven-factor digital photometer using tablet reagents rather than the liquid-and-tablet mix in the 2086. It is a genuine alternative for buyers who prefer foil-packed tablets.
Its seven factors include free/total chlorine, bromine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer. Confirm you are buying code 2087, not a reagent refill.
ColorQ 2x PRO 7
LaMotte code 2086 measures seven factors: free/total chlorine, bromine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid. It uses liquid reagents for sanitizer and pH, plus TesTabs for the other factors.
The manufacturer lists 144 tests each for sanitizer/pH and 100 for alkalinity, hardness and stabilizer with supplied reagents. Check refill codes and expiration dates.
ColorQ 2x PRO 9
LaMotte code 2088 adds iron (0–3 ppm) and copper (0–4 ppm) to the PRO 7 testing panel. Those metal measurements are useful for diagnosing staining or metal-containing source water.
The nine standard factors are included; optional biguanide testing requires separate reagent code 3919-G. Do not mistake optional factors for included chemistry.
WaterLink Spin Touch
WaterLink Spin Touch uses single-use SpinDisk reagent cartridges for multi-factor testing, with a roughly 60-second pool/spa test cycle. Store unit 3580 and mobile unit 3581 are distinct packages.
SpinDisk cartridges are sold separately; match each disk to the exact tests and meter. This is usually hard to justify for occasional single-pool testing.
LaMotte ColorQ reagents & SpinDisks
Replenish compatible ColorQ 2x reagents or WaterLink Spin Touch SpinDisks instead of replacing a functioning meter. Liquid reagents, TesTabs and SpinDisks are not interchangeable.
Match the part number to your model and method; check test factors, expiry, packaging and storage. SpinDisk cartridges are single-use.

BUYER'S DECISION GUIDE
How to Choose a LaMotte Pool Test
Choose a testing method based on your actual decisions, repeat frequency and total cost of reagents.
Choose the parameters first
List the measurements you routinely need: sanitizer, pH, alkalinity, hardness, stabilizer or salt. Compare exact kit coverage rather than assuming every tester measures all of them.
Match the workflow
Strips are quick screening tools; liquid reagents support hands-on testing; digital colorimeters and disc photometers add equipment and consumables.
Account for consumables
Compare replacement reagents, discs, expiration dates, storage conditions and the number of tests per package before deciding which system costs less to operate.
Use sound sampling technique
Follow the kit manual for clean sample containers, timing, storage and interpretation. If results conflict with symptoms or treatment decisions, confirm with a suitable independent test.

LaMotte Testing Pre-Purchase Checklist
Check these details before ordering a meter, strips or replacement chemistry.
- List the water parameters you actually need to measure.
- Confirm exact tester model and reagent or disc compatibility.
- Check consumable shelf life, test count and refill availability.
- Review instructions for sample handling, timing and calibration or checks.
- Compare total recurring testing costs, not just the device price.
- Diagnose a repair fault before ordering a replacement part.
Follow LaMotte instructions for sample collection, reagent handling, storage and disposal; never mix reagents from unrelated methods.
BUYER QUESTIONS
LaMotte Pool Testing FAQs
Answers to the compatibility and sizing questions worth resolving before you place an order.
Can Insta-TEST 6 Plus replace a full testing kit?
No. Code 3028 provides convenient routine screening but its color blocks have finite resolution. Confirm unexpected or treatment-critical readings with a suitable independent method.
What is the difference between ColorQ 2x PRO 7 and PRO 9?
PRO 7 (2086) covers seven factors. PRO 9 (2088) adds iron and copper; optional biguanide chemistry is separate. Both are digital meters, not reagent-free devices.
Do ColorQ kits need replacement reagents?
Yes. Verify the exact reagent system and replacement part numbers for your model, along with expiration dates and proper storage.
Is WaterLink Spin Touch intended for home pools?
The 3580 store and 3581 mobile configurations are professional-oriented. They use separately purchased single-use SpinDisks, so compare ongoing cartridge costs with how often you test.
Can I use any LaMotte reagent with any tester?
No. Test methods, chemistry and instrument requirements differ. Follow the precise model instructions and approved reagent or disc compatibility information.
