Pipe Size Calculator
Estimate the inside pipe diameter needed for a target flow while staying at or below a selected water velocity.

What this estimate can tell you
Use the calculator as a planning tool, then verify product labels, equipment manuals, measurements and local requirements before acting.
GPM = velocity × pipe area × 448.831.
GPM = velocity × pipe area × 448.831.

Why velocity matters
Smaller pipe raises water velocity and friction loss at a given flow. Excessive velocity can increase noise, reduce pump efficiency and make the system harder to balance.
Suction and return are different
Manufacturer engineering references commonly apply lower velocity limits to suction plumbing than to return plumbing. Public and commercial systems may have mandatory code limits, and suction design also involves entrapment protection.
Use a full hydraulic design
This calculator sizes only from flow and velocity. It does not calculate total dynamic head, fitting equivalent length, elevation, branch balancing or allowable suction conditions.
Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator estimate pipe diameter?
It rearranges the flow equation using the selected GPM and maximum water velocity to estimate the minimum inside diameter.
Is nominal pipe size the same as inside diameter?
No. Actual inside diameter depends on material, schedule and manufacturer dimensions.
Why use larger pool plumbing?
Larger pipe generally reduces velocity and friction loss at the same flow, which can improve hydraulic efficiency.
What velocity should I use?
Use the equipment manufacturer’s engineering guidance and applicable code. Suction plumbing often requires more conservative limits than return plumbing.
Can I size suction pipe with this calculator alone?
No. Suction design must address drain configuration, entrapment protection, fittings, branch flow and applicable safety codes.
Do elbows change the required pipe size?
Elbows and other fittings add head loss. They may not change the velocity-based diameter, but they affect the pump flow the system can actually deliver.
Why is the suggested nominal size only approximate?
The calculator does not know the actual inside diameter of the selected pipe product. Compare the calculated diameter with the manufacturer’s dimension table.
Should a new pump use the old pipe size?
Not automatically. A higher-flow pump on restrictive plumbing may waste energy or operate outside the desired range. Review the complete system before replacement.
